The competition aims to help accelerate the launch of local green start-ups by providing valuable pitch training, access to financing sources, professional mentorship and networking opportunities that are critical for our region to become a clean tech hub and provide another leg to our regional economic stool.

"The Great Green Business Search is central to The Green Chamber's mission of advancing a sustainable economy," said Green Chamber Chairman of the Board Michael Grossman. "By discovering, promoting and funding low carbon companies that are trying to sprout in the desert, the Chamber is helping to overcome some of the often-repeated barriers to entry that exist locally for the clean tech industry. Not only are we excited to be facilitating the connections between entrepreneurs and capital, professional talent and the local media, but as boosters of our local economy, we're just as enthusiastic to see the innovative ideas being developed in our own backyard."

Competition Format

Each entrant will be given five minutes on stage in front of a judging panel of experts to explain their unique product or service, the problem they intend to solve and the market they intend to serve. Slide and video presentations are permitted as adjuncts to the presentation. Contestants will also be allowed to showcase their services and ideas at assigned tables outside the presentation area.

Cash Prizes

There are three prizes to be awarded as follows: First Prize - $5,000; Second Prize - $2,500 and the Peoples' Choice Award winner - $1,000.

Judges' Panel

"Raising Green in the Desert" panelists will discuss raising capital and the impact of the recently passed Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act, which changed Securities and Exchange Commission rules to allow startups to use internet advertising, including social media, to solicit a large number of small investors. The "Legally Green" panel will feature panelists with legal backgrounds to discuss intellectual property issues, contracts, and trade secrets to name a few.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

City of Phoenix Taps Two Green Chamber Greater Phoenix
Board Members for Key Positions

Phoenix Mayor Stanton adds Colin Tetreault as Senior Policy Director for Sustainability
and Mara DeFilippis Joins City of Phoenix as Clean Tech Business Liaison

Phoenix, Ariz. (January 31, 2012) – The City of Phoenix expands sustainability initiatives and adds two Green Chamber Greater Phoenix Board Members as sustainability policy and economic development leaders.

Green Chamber Greater Phoenix founder and current Board member Mara DeFilippis has taken over as the City of Phoenix new business liaison for the clean tech industry, matching companies within the sector that are growing with workers and programs that can provide qualified applicants to ensure Phoenix’s clean tech pioneers thrive.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has asked Board member Colin Tetreault to serve as Senior Policy Director for Sustainability.  Tetreault, a faculty member at ASU’s School of Sustainability, will be reporting directly to Mayor Stanton on both policy as well as city operations in conjunction with the Green Phoenix program launched in 2009.

While both DeFilippis and Tetreault will continue their volunteer service with the Green Chamber Greater Phoenix Board, they both noted their new roles would help forge closer ties between two organizations that share a commitment to sustainability.

“One of the Green Chamber’s mission cornerstones is promoting connectivity between the public, private and academic sectors that are leading the clean economy charge locally,” said DeFilippis. “My new role only helps to improve the way we interact so we have the workforce necessary for a more diverse and sustainable economy.”

Tetreault added, “Among the many reasons I’m excited about this new position is because it will help keep our members closer to the flow of constantly evolving information in the sustainability sector, making the Green Chamber’s a portal for anyone who cares about how we operate and develop our economy while protecting what we love about the city.”

Green Chamber Greater Phoenix Board President Leslie Lindo congratulated both DeFilippis and Tetreault, citing the breadth and depth of knowledge about sustainability each brings to the organization, its members—and now to the entire city. “Having the City recruit Mara and Colin is evidence that the Green Chamber is the place to be to discover, promote, network and be a voice for green businesses. Their new roles will only serve to make our organization and our city stronger.”

“Mara was the brainchild and the founder of the Green Chamber,” added Board Chairman, Michael Grossman. “Considering how far our organization has come in three years under her leadership, I can’t wait to see what she can accomplish for green businesses and job seekers in this new role.”

The Green Chamber Appoints Two New Board Members

The Green Chamber: Greater Phoenix added two leaders in the Valley’s green economy to its Board of Directors prior to the holidays.

Newly elected Board members Ron Vokoun of Mortenson Construction and Marc Sobelman of ECOtality North America will better help represent the diversity of local companies committed to the low carbon economy, said the Chamber’s Board President, Leslie Lindo.

Vokoun brings over twenty years of experience in the construction industry, with a heavy emphasis on renewable energy manufacturing facilities like the Gestamp Solar Steel Manufacturing facility in Surprise, and water/wastewater facilities like the 24th Street Water Treatment Plant project. He is a LEED Accredited Professional with a specialty in Building Design and Construction with a certification of Designated Design Build Professional by the Design-Build Institute of America, and has managed projects in seven different states as well as Japan.

Sobelman is in charge of planning and implementing electric vehicle charging station infrastructure in the Phoenix and Tucson markets for the EV Project being funded through the Department of Energy and ECOtality. As ECOtality’s Arizona ‘go to’ person, he works with stakeholders in the public and private sectors to ensure the greatest accessibility for EV drivers. Marc is also the veteran of three technology start-up companies in the Phoenix area, making him an ideal fit for the growing Green Chamber. He holds a BA in Marketing and Management from Northern Arizona University.

“Studies show that ‘greening’ construction and alternative fuel vehicles are two key opportunities to create good paying jobs in industries that can be centered in Arizona. Marc and Ron bring the sorts of real world skills to our organization that will help the Green Chamber be a catalyst for the creation of these green collar jobs through their understanding of the needs of these industries and their business acumen,” said Lindo.

Vokoun and Sobelman join a diverse Board that includes experts in corporate social responsibility, sustainable building practices, corporate strategy and messaging as well as workforce development and sustainable operations in the public and private sectors.
